30 Day Cowlean Challenge, Day Fourteen: Combating Stress

So I learned my lesson: I went out and stuck to spirits. While it’s a decent jump up from yesterday, it means I’m finishing week two 2.2 lbs/ 1 kg down. That’s a nice, solid trend, again indicating fat loss.

Today I want to talk a little bit about combating stress through magnesium. Stress is an inescapable part of our lives, and even though we’re no longer being chased by lions, we perceive social threats as being just as terrifying. Unfortunate for us, your brain will always find something scary to shy away from, even if the repercussions don’t mean much.

When we’re stressed out, we release adrenaline and this draws magnesium out of the body. Therefore, we can improve our resilience to stress by making sure we have adequate magnesium. Unfortunately, due to the poor nutrient quality of the standard western diet, we’re largely deficient in this mineral, and even if you were eating a healthy diet, soil depletion and water treatment has ensured that mineral content is low.

That’s why supplementing with magnesium is a great idea, especially in a world so awash with information; a world that demands attention and provides so much fodder to stress you out! Regular readers will know that my go to brand is Solgar; I opt for magnesium citrate (a type which is absorbed easily) and take 800 mg a day. Half of that I take at lunchtime, to give some extra back-up for the day, and half of it before bed. An added benefit of magnesium is that it is relaxing and aids with sleep, leading to better rest and recovery in a shorter amount of time. You’re more likely to wake up feeling energised, and that leads to a lower impact of stress too!
